Original study example
Consider the discrete-time system y[n] = 2x[n]. For input samples [1, -1, 0], find the output. What happens if the input doubles or shifts by one sample?
Work through the example
Multiply each input sample by two to obtain [2, -2, 0]. Doubling the input doubles every output sample. Shifting the input by one sample shifts the output by the same amount because this rule has no separate dependence on n.
